Tip Tuning 101: Make Your Piping Tips (and Flowers) Better Than Ever

Don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds and totally worth it once you see how beautifully realistic your buttercream flowers become. Ready to make your tips—and your flowers—better than ever? What Is Tip Tuning?

So, what the heck is tip tuning?

Tip tuning is the process of modifying your piping tips to create thinner openings, which are perfect for piping delicate, realistic flower petals. That’s it! Simple, effective, and absolutely transformative.

Tools You’ll Need

Tip tuning is super easy, and you probably already have everything you need in your garage or junk drawer. Here’s what you’ll need:

Needle nose pliers
Flathead screwdriver (optional)
A good dose of patience

How Do I Know Which Tips Need Tuning?

Great question! Not all piping tips need tuning. Only certain types benefit from the tweak. Below, I’ll walk you through how to tune the two most common tunable tip types:

Straight petal tips
Curved petal tips

Tuning Straight Petal Tips

For tips like Wilton 101, 102, 103, and 104:

Gently pinch the wide bottom end with your needle nose pliers to make it slightly narrower.
Do NOT touch the already-narrow top portion—if you pinch that area, your petals will become too thin and may tear during piping.

Example:
Tuning a Wilton 101 or 104 by gently pinching the wide end. The narrow top stays untouched.

Tuning Curved Petal Tips

Curved or teardrop-shaped tips—like Wilton 59s, Ateco 161, Korea 61, PP 123, or Wilton 123—are tuned the same way:

Pinch the wide bottom end just a tiny bit.
Leave the narrow top portion alone—it’s already narrow enough.

Note: Some tips are harder to tune depending on the metal. Ateco tips are famously more stubborn than Wilton ones.

Example:
A Wilton 59s or Korea 61 gets tuned the same way: bottom wide end is pinched, the top remains untouched.

Untuning Tips

Sometimes you’ll get a piping tip that’s too narrow—so narrow that the petals curl inward or outward instead of standing upright. But don’t toss it!

To untune a tip:

Insert a flathead screwdriver into the opening
Gently widen it until your petals pipe with the right structure

Example:
Untuning an Ateco 124k to prevent inward-curling petals.
